Kendrick Lamar on Tap at Porter's Pub

Porter's Pub at UCSD is quickly becoming another go-to spot for hip-hop in San Diego, thanks to the efforts of SoundDiego LIVE alumni Black Resume.

The group has been throwing successful shows throughout the summer with rising, blog-era favorites in the hip-hop realm, including Pacific Divison and Dom Kennedy. This Friday, Black Rez brings out another rising star, Kendrick Lamar.

Kendrick Lamar is the Compton-based rapper who, in a few short years, has gone from complete obscurity to being crowned the New King of the West Coast by Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and the Game. Despite co-signs from two of the godfathers of West Coast gangsta rap and, um, their bastard son who idolizes them to an uncomfortable level, Kendrick has very little in common with any of them. Instead, he sounds more like a lost member of the Hieroglyphics crew, with a mix of slippery flows, self-deprecating humor and a little extra loner introspection over blissful production.

A plethora of local acts are also performing that night. Of course, hosts Black Resume bring their decidely more West Coast-tinged bangers to the table. The whole 5&A Dime-centric crew including Brother Nature, Piff Herrera, and Ta'East will rock the stage as well, and rounding out the night are the Dudez, Rob Grimes, Chuuwee and Stevie Crooks.
