Taking the Pulse of San Diego

Reggae stars Steel Pulse play two shows in town this weekend

On Friday for you swing cats, there’s Cherry Poppin’ Daddies at Sycuan Casino. If you’re looking for a reggae vibe, check out Fortunate Youth at the Irenic. If an all-night blues party is more your thing, the Bedbreakers are playing at the Whistle Stop. And for your punk fix, there’s One Way System, Mass Terror and Embalmers at Soda Bar. Other live-music options include the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Fear of Men and Ablebody at the Casbah; Shake Before Us, Schitzophonics, Badabing and Gloomsday at the Tower Bar; Neighbors to the North at Gallagher’s; and the Johnny Clegg Band plays a sold-out show at the Belly Up. Plus, get your dance on with Le Youth at Bang Bang.

Saturday, the OMBAC Beach Music Fest hits Mariner’s Point, with live music from Steel Pulse, J Boog and more. Later that night, Club Sabbat takes over both rooms at Numb3rs with DJs Dark Angel and yours truly in the front room, while Diskdroid keeps it old school in the back room. Get more details here. Booty Bassment hits the Whistle Stop with DJs Dimitri and Rob; MayStar’s Fashion Whore is at U-31; Armin van Buuren takes over Valley View Casino Center; Psychemagik, Shige, Adam Salter and Bob Dazzla are at El Dorado; and Pete Tong is at Bang Bang. For your live-music fix, We Are Scientists and Paws play at the Casbah; Survival Knife, Beehive & the Barracudas and Hungry Ghost are at Soda Bar; Ghetto Blaster headline the Tin Can; Chica Diabla, Masteria, Cedar Fire and Subsurfer are at the Shakedown; and Grizzly Business, Mittens and Super Buffet play at the Ken Club.

Sunday is the last day of Gator By the Bay, so that might be a fun way to spend your Mother’s Day. Or get in some pool time at Intervention at the Hard Rock Hotel with Donald Glaude. Later that night, Steel Pulse play a sold-out show at the Belly Up; Prayers, High Functioning Flesh, Aaimon and DJ Mario Orduno are at the Casbah; Wild Wild Wets headline at Soda Bar; Erica Davies and Her Wolf take over Sycamore Den; and Kahgoo, River Uphill and Danny & the Tramp play at U-31.

Do something nice for your mom, have a great weekend, and I’ll see you on the dance floor.
