It's About the Musiq

Philadephia native Musiq Soulchild (Taalib Johnson), has been recording music for nearly a decade, attracting fans of jazz, rhythm & blues, neo-soul and hip-hop to his soulful sound.

Touring behind his latest album, MusiqInTheMagiq, SoulChild will perform at the Belly Up Tavern on Tuesday, June 28.

The 33-year-old singer/songwriter has been nominated for 11 Grammy awards, beginning with his sophomore album, Juslisen, which was recorded in 2002.  "Don't Change" and "Half Crazy" were the hit tracks that earned him the Best R&B Album nomination for that year. Soulchild's debut album, Aijuswanaseing (2000), featured the fan-favorite track "Mary Go Round."  The easy listening, jazz-tinged "Just Friends" is also featured on this album.  Other songs includes "Love," "SoBeautiful" and "Girl Next Door," with each becoming fan favorites throughout his career. MusiqInTheMagiq features the hit single "Anything," which was recorded with producer Swizz Beatz

As thoughtful and creative as Soulchild's music is, his unique style of naming his albums and track titles isn't an oversight. Most of his work's titles break grammar and writing rule, and usually have phoentic spelling, intentionally. A great example of this is his moniker, Musiq; he was given the name while performing and creating music while living in Philadephia. Soulchild's music delves into the soul and hearts of his fans, and his writing abilities showcase his talents for poetry and crafting tales of love.

This musical angel will peform at the Belly Up Tavern. Doors are at 7 p.m., with San Diego's own  Styletones opening the show at 8 p.m. Ticket are $45 in advance; $47 day of show.
