Haunted House: DJ IDeaL's October EDM Picks

DJ IDeaL drops the beat on all the EDM action hitting San Diego in the very busy month of October

Let's dive right to this month's top EDM events, shall we?

On Saturday, Oct. 7, SoCal’s Lovelife, whose home was founded in San Diego, celebrates their six-year anniversary with a special-location daytime party at the Cesar Chavez Park featuring Super Flu and Saand -- with the after-party raging at Blonde with Kevin Knapp of Hot Creations and friends. The same night, the party is poppin' at Gossip Grill as the house-music community joins forces to raise funds for those still in need due to the Mexico City earthquakes at United For Mexico featuring Harvard Bass, Manik, Halo Varga, Wally Callerio and many more.

With plenty of sun still to enjoy during October, Hard Rock Hotel gets taken over the next day (Oct. 8) by a special ‘intimate’ event with one of the leading dance-music acts of 2017: Gorgon City.

On Wednesday, Oct. 11, Los Angeles represents with Perfect Driver artists, Deep Tribe, dropping tunes at San Diego’s longest-running house-music Wednesday-night party. Expect deep vibing tunes blended with progressive-house sounds with the party going till 2 a.m.

The following night, the final YouTopia (more on that later) fundraiser presented by Digital Cocoon hosts DanceGruv Radio’s Brian Maiz with DC’s resident DJs setting up the night.

Saturday (Oct. 14) United by Bass and Soul On Beat join forces for an art-and-music gathering at the World Beat Center with a stacked lineup featuring three stages varying between the sounds of house and drum n' bass. Take in the musical likings of house music’s DJ Heather, Joeski, Miles Maeda or bounce back and forth between the DnB stage or the Local Love stage to have the bass boom you from the legendary DJ Marky, Metric or the East Coast's Wes Smith. With plenty of vendors, artists of various kinds, and elaborate dancers, this is what San Diego is made for.

San Diego celebrates U31’s 10-year anniversary on Wednesday, Oct. 18, with a reunion of lineups for a wild party like only U31 can bring you with potential Champagne showers and nudity behind the DJ decks from Junior the Disco Punk, Kid Wonder, Artistic and more.

On Oct. 19, San Diego CityBeat presents A Night at the Besties on the Inspiration Hornblower, where they will award and celebrate the best of San Diego ranging from music, dining, hospitality and more. I happen to be nominated in the Top 5 DJs in San Diego (hopefully you voted, too) category and will be performing as well! Tickets are available here for this all-inclusive experience featuring hosted open bar, food, casino night, art shows, photo booth, and more with multiple floors of music for you to enjoy!

The same night, San Diego’s official Burning Man regional party, YouTopia, kicks off. A camping gathering of artists in which all are one, celebrating the culture and principals of Burning Man, with no "main stage" and plenty of artistic free souls will span the La Jolla Indian Reservation on Oct. 19-23. I will fortunately be sharing my music on a few of the stage camps being set up and it shall be an experience you'll never forget. For more info, go here.

If you're skipping the campout, there is a special treat on Oct. 20 at Spin Nightclub, where the United By Bass crew presents Tech House’s Camelphat. With one of the hottest tracks of the summer in "Cola," Camelphat is a must-see act with possible previews of their new, hot, unreleased jams at this show.

Saturday (Oct. 21) acts as a double-header with the second in a series of Satellite Events by Techniche at Kava Lounge, and the Official Re:Fresh After-Party featuring special guests (and Re:Fresh DJs) David Devine and Maleko.

Jumpstart your Halloween weekend celebrations on Oct. 27 with Soul Work's Sin Party at Spin with Uner (Spain) and Ben Seagren (Distrikt-SF). Swoop on your velvet cape to keep you warm in your lace. Don your masque and lower your inhibitions and enter a world of indulgence and sin.

On Oct. 28, board the Inspiration Hornblower again for a Titanic Masquerade and enjoy the beautiful San Diego Bay with one of the wildest Halloween parties around -- which will also celebrate its sixth annual trip of insanity (costumes are highly recommended). If you’re staying in the city, the Hard Rock Hotel hosts the hottest Halloween party in the Gaslamp, with Benny Benassi manning the main floor at Tragic Kingdom -- which also features more than 15 DJs spinning on three hotel levels and five decked-out rooms.

With so much fun in the city going on, this Halloween's four-to-five-day weekend is sure to be a blast! Also, make sure to mark your calendars as my new radio show "In the Mixxx" kicks off on Oct. 27-28 on FM949HD3's dance music channel, Glow! Be sure to listen in every following Friday (7-10 p.m.) and Saturday night (9 p.m.-midnight)!
