DiFranco in Diego

The musical calm of San Diego is about to be shattered  by an international icon of music, poetry and progressive thinking.

DIY legend and Righteous Babe Records founder Ani DiFranco will take the stage at the House of Blues on April 1, along with Animal Prufrock.

DiFranco, whose last album, Red Letter Year, was released 2008, will be hitting West Coast venues all through April. Fans can expect the feminist icon to play her signature autobiographical, poetic, political folk music.  Her songs tackle topics such as sexual orientation, politics, religion, racism, and women’s rights.

Some have found DiFranco’s work hard to define; the artist herself once said, “It seems that different people have an idea of what I am and what I should be. And then there's me.” Here's a link to "Smiling Underneath" for music fans unfamiliar with DiFranco's catalog.

Owning her own record label, which DiFranco founded at 19, has allowed her to retain artistic control over her music throughout her career. Her show at the House of Blues is guaranteed to leave audiences with some food for thought.

Doors open at HOB at 7 p.m. on April 1. Click here for tickets.
