San Diego Gets Popping

Normal 0 With the kickoff of the summer pops season just weeks away, local music fans are being offered a special deal to attend the outdoor performances near the Embarcadero.

One of the stand-out shows of the season is an event especially programmed for Comic-Con attendees, a Martial Arts Trilogy performance on July 21 led by Oscar-winning composer Tan Dun, who will lead the orchestra though the scores of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero and The Banquet.

This weekend, concertgoers have the chance to buy tickets for 50 percent off for that show and two others through our Goods program

Summer Pops conductor Matthew Garbutt told SoundDiego that the performance he's looking forward to the most will the Music of James Bond event on July 17, with special guest Josie Jones, one of crooner Burt Bacharach's favorite singers. The night promises classics from Goldfinger, The Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only. The night is sure to leave fans you shaken, not stirred.

Tickets for a third show, Motown's Greatest Hits With Spectrum and Radiance, on July 8-9, are also being offered for half-price through the Goods.

Fans can also see the symphony's orchestra perform this summer alongside music icons like Dennis DeYoung and the Music of Styx (Aug. 12-13), Bacharach (Aug. 7) and country star Wynonna Judd (Aug. 26-27). Some might be surprised to hear that LA music force Ozomatli, too, has signed on for a performance in late August. Also on the radar are the rock-band tribute shows featuring the music of the Beatles and Rolling Stones, as well as Neil Diamond -- that's a Super Diamond show.
