Academy Award-Winner Plays East County

Ryan Bingham is a 27-year-old rodeo bull rider turned singer/songwriter, from Hobbs, New Mexico. As of Sunday night, he's also an Academy Award winner for Best Original Song, with "The Weary Kind" (co-written by legendary producer T-Bone Burnett) from the film Crazy Heart. In the film, Jeff Bridges (who took home the Oscar for Best Actor) and Colin Farrell perform renditions of the song, while Bingham and his band, Dead Horses, serve as the backing band.

What's next for the Oscar-winning musician with a classic Americana sound? Would you believe a free show in El Cajon?

KPRI is helping put on the show at Border's Books in El Cajon on Tuesday.  Ryan's show will start at 6:30 p.m., and the first 25 fans to arrive will get passes to a screening of Crazy Heart at the Regal Parkway Plaza in El Cajon. In addition to "The Weary Kind," Bingham will perform new tracks from his forthcoming Dead Horses release (produced by T-Bone Burnett).  The show is a major score for KPRI, whose music director and afternoon host Oz Medina checkedin with the following description of Ryan: "Ryan Bingham is an American folk rocker whose music is inspired by rednecks, white socks and blue ribbon beer."

Following his San Diego appearance, Bingham will be performing on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Wednesday.
