We Won't See Their Tax Returns

At his KQED blog Capital Notes, John Myers explains how it is that Meg Whitman and Jerry Brown won't be releasing their tax returns. And the terrible precedent that sets.

There are real questions about Whitman's wealth and her compliance with tax laws. And Brown's own family finances have been a source of speculation. The bottom line: no matter the wealth of the candidates, governors have real power and the public needs to know how they manage their finances -- and whether they pay their taxes -- before we put them in charge of our finances and taxes. By refusing to release these records, Whitman and Brown have earned voter distrust.

Please feel free to assume the worst about the financial practices of each.
