Samsung announced it sold 10 million of its Galaxy S smartphones since June and hopes to double its sales in 2011, it was reported today. However, the Android platform phone still has a way to go to catch up with Apple's iPhone, which boasted 14.1 million handhelds sold from June through September.
“For the time being, Apple’s presence in the smartphone market will remain solid,” Young Park, a Seoul-based analyst at Woori Investment & Securities Co. told Bloomberg. “As time goes on, based on their brand power and their relationship with telecommunication companies, their numbers should be increasing steadily."
The South Korean-based phonemaker will reportedly ship 61 million smartphones this year, but so far no word on when any of its users will be getting the Android 2.2, or Froyo, upgrade.
Android, Apple’s iOS and RIM’s Blackberry OS have dominated the smartphone market, but the Android platform seems to be gaining momentum, with more than 40 percent of U.S. customers buying Android smartphones in the last six months, according to a recent study released by Nielsen. Those buying iPhones in the last six months were only 26.9 percent. However, overall, Apple still shows a slight lead in the smartphone market, 28.6 percent over Android's 26.1 percent of marketshare. The BlackBerry OS comes in third at 25.8 percent..
