Google announced Monday that it's completed its first "fully-functional," self-driving car prototype that can ferry passengers around highways and neighborhoods.

Google writes that the version it unveiled last May was "an early mockup," meaning it didn't have headlights, only went about 25 miles an hour and was about "learning, not luxury." Instead, engineers were more concerned about seatbelts and safety. The new prototypes include all the typical car parts as well as computer sensors, but also temporary steering wheels and manual controls -- as per the state's Department of Motor Vehicle rules, which by the way, will not meet its Jan. 1 deadline.
"We’re going to be spending the holidays zipping around our test track, and we hope to see you on the streets of Northern California in the new year," Google wrote.
