Google Says It Didn't Bid for Whatsapp

A senior executive for Google said that the tech titan never bid for the social messaging company Whatsapp, according to a report.

Facebook purchased the startup Whatsapp for $19 billion after it was reported that Google bid $10 billion, but the report wasn't true, the Telegraph reported.

Sundar Pichai, senior vice president at Google overseeing Android, Chrome and Google Apps, spiked the report at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. “Whatsapp was definitely an exciting product,” he told the Telegraph. “We never made an offer to acquire them. Press reports to the contrary are simply untrue.”

Recently Mark Zuckerberg said that Whatsapp was worth more than the $19 billion he paid, but perhaps now that statement seems a bit less believable. In fact, anonymous sources suggested that the news of the Google bid were in "Facebook's interest."
