Facebook Breaks the Internet

Several major websites were rendered useless by a Facebook error, according to reports.

On Thursday, popular websites such as CNN, Fox News and Yahoo redirected users to an error page at Facebook, which may mean the error was caused by Facebook Connect, according to AllThingsD. Facebook Connect is a software platform that can reach a lot of media through third-party sites and the "Like" button.

Facebook didn't waste much time explaining itself. β€œFor a short period of time, there was a bug that redirected people logging in with Facebook from third-party sites to Facebook.com," a Facebook wag told AllThingsD. "The issue was quickly resolved, and Login with Facebook is now working as usual.”

The reality is that at least 35 major websites were affected, mainly media from ABC to the Washington Post for up to an hour, according to InfoWorld. And those sites were probably not aware that a Facebook glitch could down their Web pages simply for using their "Like," "Share" or "Comment" buttons.
