Cop Kills Self After Reading Girlfriend's Facebook Page

Authorities say a police officer killed himself with his service weapon on a New York City street after checking his girlfriend's Facebook page to find out if she was seeing anyone else.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne says Officer Philip Chlanda was in Midtown Manhattan and on a meal break at around 3 a.m. Tuesday when he began arguing with the 26-year-old woman. He told the woman he loved her, then shot himself in the head with his service weapon as she watched.

Browne called Chlanda's suicide an unexpected tragedy. He said the officer had been on the force about four years and had "an unblemished record."

It was the department's first suicide of the year. Two officers took their own lives in 2010.
