Apple Buys Micro-LED Maker LuxVue Technology

Apple acquired micro-LED company LuxVue Technology, according to reports released Friday.

LuxVue Technology, which worked on micro-LED, recently raised $43 million in funding, so apparently it had investors believing in its potential, according to TechCrunch. Apple confirmed the deal in a statement, saying, "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," which TechCrunch took as a confirmation of the news.

Micro-LED displays could mean they may be used in the new incarnation of the iPhone or iPad which could lengthen battery life and give users a brighter screen. Tim Cook said last month that Apple was on the lookout for "strategic technologies" to give Apple an edge on the competition, according to the Wall Street Journal, and that Apple had bought 24 companies in the last 18 months.

With nothing on the iPhone or iPad front to report at Apple's WWDC conference, it would seem that the micro-LED integration will be showing up a little later on Apple's devices. Perhaps at its sapphire crystal facility in Arizona?
