“Lost” Finale Going Where No Finale Has Ever Gone: 150 Minutes

Have you started planning your “Lost” finale party yet? Got your palm fronds and fruity cocktails and puzzles that take six years to solve handy? Well, good. Because your guests will be staying late at your place/hatch that night, now that May 23’s “Lost” finale just grew an extra 30 minutes. The Hollywood Reporter says the final episode will now run a whopping two and a half hours.

The producers of ABC's hit drama have shot so much crucial material for the show's hugely anticipated series finale that the network has agreed to extend the last episode by an extra half hour.

When the "Lost" finale airs on Sunday, May 23rd, the episode will run from 9 to 11:30 p.m… The supersizing of the finale is the latest adjustment to what might as well be called "The 'Lost' Weekend." ABC is airing an "enhanced" (pop-ups) version of the show's original two-hour pilot on May 22. On Sunday there's a two-hour retrospective titled "Lost: The Final Journey," followed by the finale, then the local news (which was preempted in the first-blush recounting of this plan) and Kimmel post-show.

This news comes on the heels of all kinds of craziness swirling around “The End,” which is the finale’s title. The finale may also be screened in a handful of movie theaters. Ad rates for the show have climbed over $900,000. And co-creator Damon Lindelof has hinted that the show may spawn a whole lotta questions. You can feel this whole thing building to an apex. Hopefully one that won’t have Losties burning down Lindelof’s home afterwards.

Most series (and season) finales these days get supersized. But this may be the first time I’ve heard of a show stretching out past the 120-minute mark. Now maybe it’s because Lindelof and company wanted to be sure to tie up every possible loose end. Or perhaps it’s ABC wanting to squeeze out a few more of those massive ad dollars. Either way, you now get five and a half hours of “Lost” programming the night of May 23. That’s a long time. Almost as long as Jack & co. have been on that island.
