Betty White's appearance in a Super Bowl ad sparked a Facebook campaign that has actually come to fruition, as the octogenarian funnywoman will host an upcoming episode of "Saturday Night Live."
Yes... I don't know why or how," White told People, when asked if she would be hosting.
The Betty White to Host SNL (please?)! Facebook page launched shortly after White was seen by millions playing football with men one-third her age in a Snickers commercial. Since then , it has attracted more than 485,000 fans.
When the word first got back to White, she dismissed it as ridiculous.
"I don't even know where that came from," White said to People when the topic first came up in February. "That just came out of left field. It's ridiculous. I don't think [SNL creator and producer] Lorne Michaels even knows about it, so we won't worry about it."
For you whippersnappers out there who don't know any better, Betty White is a comic genius whose work as one of the original passive-aggressive monsters on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" still holds up more than 30 years later. The woman has serious chops.
At 88, White is poised to shatter the record for oldest person to host "SNL." That distinction is currently held by Miskel Spillman, an 80-year-old woman who in 1977 won the show's "Anyone Can Host" contest.

It was during Spillman's episode that Elvis Costello gave his notorious performance of "Radio, Radio," which he'd been forbidden to play by the show's producers because of its indictment of broadcasters. This led to Costello being banned from the show for more than a decade.
