New Movies: Will “The American” Be “Going the Distance” to See “Machete”

It's Labor Day weekend, the de facto end of summer -- what better way to mark the occassion than to sit in an air-conditioned room with a couple hundred strangers while shoveling empty calories in your mouth? Let's take a look at your choices....

"The American"
George Clooney stars as an assassin hiding out in the hills of Italy while awaiting his last assignment. He meets a beautiful woman -- two in fact -- that will change his life forever. From director Anton Corbijn, this film does a nice job of recapturing the intrigue, paranoia and look of '70s American cinema with a European vibe. "Going the Distance"
Drew Barrymore and Justin Long star in this romcom as a couple trying to navigate a romance with 3,000 miles keeping them apart. Fortunately, Jason Sudekis and Charlie Day bring enough laughs to keep things from getting too painful. If it's your romcom-loving significant other's turn to pick the movie, and s/he drops this one on you, count your blessings that Katherine Heigl doesn't have a movie out this week. In theaters everywhere, rated R, read our review and watch the trailer

"Machete"
Danny Trejo stars in the title role in this film based on a fake trailer from director Robert Rodriguez that ran as part of "Grindhouse." In what promises to be the bloodiest movie of the summer, Machete seeks revenge against just about eveyone who hates Mexican immigrants. An all-star cast includes Cheech Marin, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, Don Johnson, Jessica Alba, and Robert De Niro. In theaters everywhere, rated R, watch the trailer

"A Woman A Gun and A Noodle Shop"
From director Zhang Yimou, best known to most Americans as the director of the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, comes this remake of the Coen Brothers' first film, "Blood SImple." In limited release, rated R, read our review and watch the trailer

"The Winning Season"
The great Sam Rockwell is a washed up basketball coach who gets a chance at redemption when the local high school's girl's team finds itself in a bind. Emma Roberts, Rooney Mara and Rob Corddry co-star in this comedy of redemption. In limited release, rated PG-13, watch the trailer

"Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1"
Vincent Cassel stars as one of France's most notorious gangsters, Jacques Mesrine, whose life of crime began in 1963 and lasted more than 15 years. It's the follow up to "Mesrine: Killer Instinct." In limited release, rated R, watch the trailer

"My Dog Tulip"
Based on JR Ackerly's 1956 book about his relationship with his German shepherd. Starring the voices of Christopher Plummer, Vanessa Redgrave and Isabella Rossellini. Warning: this film from Paul and Sandra Fierlinger is geared for adults, not kids. In limited release, unrated, watch the trailer

"We Are Family"
