“Ghostbusters” Returns! And it's Not a Sequel or a Reboot! YAY!

What's this? Are people finally waking up to the idea that simply giving classic films another theatrical go-round is infinitely more enticing than shoving a ham-fisted reboot or "reimagining" down our throats?

With "Ghostbusters 3" mercifully tied up in development hell (bless you, Bill Murray) and some executive no doubt pitching a remake starring Zach Galifianakis, Jonah Hill, and Jesse Eisenberg as we speak, there is a rapidly-spreading rumor (fueled by Aint it Cool News) that the original "Ghostbusters" will be getting a theatrical run this October.

Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore together again. This will be bigger than the rectification of the Vuldrani (but still a distant second to the third reconciliation of the McKetrick supplicants. Giant Slor FTW).

The official "Ghostbusters" Facebook page has a trailer posted. We only hope this isn't some elaborate ruse. We also pray that Ivan Reitman has managed to keep his inner George Lucas bottled up and doesn't replace the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man with an army of CGI vampires.

UPDATE: We have screening information. According to an official release from Sony Pictures:

Ghostbusters will show in approximately 500 theatres across the US on October 13th, 20th, and 27th, one showtime each day, in 2K digital with 5.1 surround sound.  Please check local listings for showtimes.  Ghostbusters will also be showing in select theatres in Canada and in various international markets; for more information on international locations and dates, please visit www.parkcircus.com.

Still no word on how many different ways Dan Aykroyd will use this as an opportunity to shill that skull vodka crap, but we will keep you posted.
