For the third straight day, San Diego is under a red flag warning and local fire resources will be helping fight massive fires in Ventura and Riverside County while keeping an eye on things here at home.
The Springs Fire has grown to more than 15 square miles, and crews are preparing for another bad day of gusting winds and hot weather. Fifteen homes have been damaged.
About 100 miles to the east in Riverside County, two homes were destroyed, two more were damaged and 11 vehicles were destroyed in a 12-acre fire near Banning that officials suspect was started Thursday by a discarded cigarette.
If needed, crews from other regions would backfill to help San Diego County if a brush fire or grass fire were to spark in our region.
A red flag warning is in effect through the day Friday.
Coming off of record-breaking heat Thursday, San Diegans are looking at another day of Santa Ana conditions.
“I think that’s a beach day on a Friday, folks,” said meteorologist Jodi Kodesh. “However, our inland areas still very, very hot.”
El Cajon residents broke a heat record with 92 degrees – well above the previous record of 87 degrees set in 2011.
“Water or lotion, water or lotion today,” reminded Kodesh.
In addition, San Diego was under a wind advisory but it was canceled before 10 a.m. and replaced with a dense fog advisory.
