Flash Flood Warning Issued for North Central San Diego County

Alpine received the most rain this week with 1.52" recorded in one afternoon

The National Weather Service issued flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of North Central San Diego County.

Residents in Warner Springs, Oak Grove, Santa Ysabel, Palomar Mountain State Park, Temecula, Hemet and surrounding areas are advised to seek higher ground as thunderstorms bring in heavy rain. The NWS issued a similar warning for Riverside County.

The warning is in effect until 5:30 p.m.

Parts of East San Diego County are going to see heavy rain. A powerful thunderstorm packing the potential of 50-mph winds hovered over Alpine Wednesday, while more hot and stormy weather was in the forecast for the evening.

β€œExpect hot and humid weather,” said NBC 7 Meteorologist Jodi Kodesh. β€œSteamy, if you will.”

The entire county is under a flash flood watch until this evening, Kodesh said.

Clouds will filter through the region with scattered showers and thunderstorms most likely in the inland valleys, mountains, and deserts.

There is the potential for flash floods with more than an inch of rain forecast within an hour in some areas.

Alpine, under thunderous conditions, broke its daily rainfall record, with 1.52 inches of rain, while nearby, Descanso only received 0.09.

"Summertime storms are designed differently than the widespread storms we get in the winter," Kodesh explained. "Monsoon season tends to create isolated thunderstorms, meaning they are few and far between, but mighty."

She said because only isolated cities experienced a thunderstorm, it’s easy to see why there are such big disparities in the rainfall totals.

On Thursday, the chance of showers and thunderstorms shifts back over the mountains and deserts, while the sunshine returns to the coast and valleys. It will still be muggy.
