Driver Survives Plunge Off Freeway

SAN DIEGO -- A driver survived after driving over an earth berm on Interstate 8 and plunging down a ravine at Adobe Falls.

The accident happened at about 6 a.m. on westbound I-8 past College Avenue. A vehicle apparently lost control on the descent into Mission Valley and swerved off the freeway, tumbling down the steep hillside and smashing into a cluster of Eucalyptus trees. The vehicle stopped about 10 yards short of a steep cement drainage ditch.
Rescue crews from the San Diego Fire Department found the driver outside the overturned vehicle, lying on the ground. Officials said he was badly shaken but had not suffered serious injuries. The car was destroyed.A fire engine was brought in on the freeway above the accident, closing the right lane of the freeway during the rescue operation. An ambulance came in from below on Adobe Falls Road.Rescuers carried the driver to the ambulance on a backboard. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
