Time to Super-Size?

Is it time to super-size San Diego's Convention Center?  A task force of civic leaders appointed by Mayor Jerry Sanders Thursday will soon tackle that issue.

Sanders said large convention clients think the facility is too small to handle their meetings, and may look elsewhere.

Conventions held there generate about $30 million a year in taxes for the city.

"We think it's probably going to be a billion-dollar expansion,” said Sanders. “So it's going to require considerable financing clout and great ideas. And that's what this group brings."

The task force begins meeting next month, with recommendations due in September. The members are listed in this article on voiceofsandiego.org.

The mayor said no money from the city's General Fund would go toward the expansion project.
