It took $26 million and 20 years, but it’s now open.

The new Hourglass Park Field House at Miramar College, which houses a gymnasium, fitness center, classrooms, dance rooms, and a concession stand, was celebrated Friday as the final phase in a project that was first discussed in the early 1980s.

Now, more than 20 years later, and with funding provided by Propositions S & N and Mira Mesa Facilities Benefit Assessment funds, the field house joins ball fields, volleyball courts and an aquatic center built in three phases.

College students will share the fitness complex with area residents through San Diego's Park & Recreation Dept.

Construction included several features making this a “green” project including using reclaimed water to irrigate water‐efficient landscaping, using non‐heat absorbing roofing materials to mitigate “heat islands”, adding waterless urinals and using recycled tires in rubber gym flooring.
