Hollywood Prod Pays $17M for La Jolla Home

We now know the identify of the "famous person" who paid more than $17 million last week for an oceanfront La Jolla home. Gary Barber, Hollywood producer and ex-husband of Bette Midler, will soon be moving into the home on Camino de la Casta.

The seller's agent, Ross Clark of Willis Allen, let the cat out of the bag earlier this week when the 9,800-square-foot Lower Hermosa home, which sits on two lots overlooking the coastline, finally closed. 

The price tag is a reported $17.3 million which is one of the highest sale prices local realtors have seen this year, according to The La Jolla Light.

Clark told the paper that the sale is a good sign for the high-end housing market since "absolutely zero homes above $10 million" have sold this year.

"I think it's wonderful that a person of that caliber would pick La Jolla to live. This is "The Jewel" and I think we're lucky and they're lucky," said resident Crystal Hasson.

The last large sale was when Cliff Robertson's La Jolla estate sold for $16.5 million in 2008.

Barber produced several popular Hollywood movie with Spyglass entertainment partner Roger Birnbaum. His projects include "27 Dresses," "Memoirs of a Geisha," "Seabiscuit," "Ace Ventura" and "The Love Guru."
