Less than a year after it opened, Freebirds World Burrito has officially closed.

Freebirds in Hillcrest was the first and only location in San Diego of the Texas-based burrito chain.

Sara Barker of Tavistock Restaurants confirmed the closure on Tuesday, but didn't cite a specific reason why it is no longer open.

“We love San Diego and we were immediately embraced by the community of Hillcrest,” Barker said in an email. “Unfortunately, trade area was not successful for us and we are moving on.”

It’s bad news for those who won a year’s worth of burritos last November.

Dozens camped out in Hillcrest last year for their chance to win 365 days of a complimentary meal. There’s more than a month left of the giveaway, and Barker said the 25 people who won can obtain their burritos at any other location. The closest restaurant is in Orange, Calif.

The space formerly located on 3958 5th Ave. is next to plenty of competition, including the increasingly-popular Snooze and multiple independent eateries. Five other restaurants also opened in Hillcrest around the same time as Freebirds.

Flock and Avoyer Commercial Real Estate firm has repainted the building from red to white, and has posted a sign advertising it is for lease.
