The dive suit many Trekkies can only dream of owning.

To boldly go where very few have gone before.

One of the more unique events that happened this past weekend during the Comic-Con 2009 madness, was a little get together inside the San Diego Culinary Center Friday evening.

There were actors, Trekkies – some in costume and full make-up – comic book writers and illustrators and divers.

What’s the connection between science fiction and diving? That would be San Diego resident Rod Roddenberry, the son of “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry.

Roddenberry heads a production company that's launching a new comic book series called "Days Missing."

Based on the concept by Roddenberry Productions executive Trevor Roth, "Days Missing" tells stories of a mysterious being known as "The Steward." His ability to literally "fold" days of time has allowed him to secretly remove critical days from our shared history that have forever changed the course of mankind. A limited number of books were available at Comic Con with the full release of the number 1 issue hitting stores in August.

However, much of the buzz was also centered on the dive team. Joined by the team’s Executive Director, Greg Martin, Roddenberry launched a new company that incorporates his love of diving with his dad’s legacy in science fiction. The business sells memberships as well as organizes events to educate people about the need to preserve the ocean’s environment.

“It's not just about wearing 'Star Trek' wet suits,” Roddenberry told the La Jolla Light at an early morning diving event at La Jolla Shores Thursday. “It's about incorporating the philosophy where we're diving into the ocean and learning about the environment."

For $49.95, you can buy an adult membership with the Roddenberry Dive Team. As part of the package you receive a certificate, dive team patch, sticker and pin.

You’ll also get a newsletter and 25 percent off at Roddenberry.com. We checked to see if you get a cool-looking diving suit like the one pictured but couldn't find one offered online. Maybe that's at a VIP membership level?

If this sounds like something you’re interested in, plan on getting involved in the group’s next event when they take part in California Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 19. Thousands of volunteers will work to collect trash and recyclables from beaches, lakes and waterways across the state.
