Street Scene's Local Beat

Look out for local rockers at Street Scene 2009

While the Street Scene music festival promises to be one of the biggest yet with headliners such as The Black Eyed Peas, Modest Mouse and M.I.A., performances by lesser-known local artists are likely to be just as exciting.

Four bands with San Diego ties are scheduled to rock Street Scene 2009- Wavves, Anya Marina, Dirty Sweet, and Delta Spirit. Be sure to check out these San Diegans August 28 and 29.

Wavves is a lo-fi/punk San Diego based band that released its first album in 2008 and a second earlier this year. A relatively new band on the scene, locals expectantly await their performance at Street Scene.

Songs by Anya Marina, another local singer/songwriter, have been featured on popular television shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, The Real World and Gossip Girl. She has been a DJ on San Diego’s FM 94.9 for some time and released her first album Miss Halfway in 2005, which earned a San Diego Music Award for Best Recording. She has recently recorded a cover of T.I.’s hit, “Whatever you Like” and continues to expand her musical talent.

Dirty Sweet formed in 2003 and was soon gained notoriety as the opening act for Jimmy Eat World. This bluesy rock band won Best Rock Band and Best Rock Album at the San Diego Music Awards in 2007 and continues to produce award-winning material.

Delta Spirit is among one of the most unique acts that will be at Street Scene this year. An Americana/Soul group, the members of Delta Spirit are known for their multi-instrumentalism and their spiritually themed lyrics. They have even been known to use unconventional instruments such as trash can lids to create their unique sound. The band self-produced and recorded their first album, Ode to Sunshine, in a cabin in the San Diego mountains and it was released in 2008. The band has since made several television appearances and is touring as the opening at for The Shins. Check out lead vocalist, Matthew Vasquez, before Street Scene in a solo show in San Diego on August 19.
