SD Hall of Champions Opens Sailing Exhibit

The San Diego Hall of Champions is opening a permanent sailing exhibit made possible by a $500,000 matching donation from 1992 America's Cup winner Bill Koch.

The exhibition will open to the public Thursday. Koch and Malin Burnham, a San Diego civic leader and former Star class world champion who was involved in the America's Cup for three decades, are scheduled to attend a private opening.

The exhibit includes a room dedicated to the America's Cup, including models and half models of boats that competed for the oldest trophy in international sports.

Koch defended the America's Cup for the San Diego Yacht Club in 1992, beating Italy's Il Moro di Venezia 4-1.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is a fully rigged Star class boat.
