Julian Hosts Historic “Gold Rush Days”

Visitors can enjoy historical reenactments, gold panning and other fun events June 9-10 in Julian, Calif.

The tiny town of Julian, Calif., experienced a short-lived gold rush back in 1869. This weekend, visitors can relive those historic golden years at Julian’s “Gold Rush Days” celebration.

The event takes place Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Julian Mining Company on 4444 Highway 78.

Admission is $10 per person and includes a bevy of gold rush-themed activities such as historical encampments with a chance to meet the same kind of miners, mountain men and cowboys that settled in Julian in its early days.

Other old-fashioned activities include gunfighting reenactments, mock claim jumping, tomahawk throwing demonstrations, children’s pioneer games and, of course, gold panning.

There will also be a special scavenger hunt happening throughout the weekend, with visitors looking for the coveted “golden nugget” at participating stores around Julian.

Over at Julian Train & Gold Mine Tours, a special train ride will be offered throughout the weekend.

The Julian Doves & Desperados will perform historic comedy skits at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on the stage area between Julian Fitness Center and the Julian Market & Deli.

Finally, the Eagle and High Peak Mine and Museum will offer daily tours of the mines from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The tours cost $10 per adult and $5 per child. Gold panning and entry into the museum are included in the price.
