Happy Birthday, Frank!

It’s Frank’s first birthday, so to celebrate, keepers at the San Diego Zoo made him a special cake.

Frank is the youngest western lowland gorilla at the zoo and is the first offspring for mom Azizi.

Frank isn’t the only one celebrating. Mali, a female bonobo who was hand-raised at the zoo, turned 2 on Friday. Mali, whose name means "something valuable" in Swahili, required human care due to medical complications at birth.

You can buy gifts for Frank and Mali at sandiegozoo.org. And so the rest of the apes don’t feel left out, the zoo will celebrate all of them during Zoo Discovery Days: Absolutely Apes, Sept. 17-20.

Guests will have the chance to meet and talk with keepers, participate in an ape-themed scavenger hunt, and learn how and what the zoo grows for its primates to eat.
