Green Beer and Good Times

Wearing green beads, hats, tights – you name it – San Diegans took over the Gaslamp last night to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day en masse with Miller Lite ShamROCK.

The annual event, presented by Jameson Irish Whiskey and The Field, is one of downtown San Diego’s largest block parties of the year.

There were three stages of live music, Irish bands (including Young Dubliners!), local DJs, go-go dancers, authentic Irish fayre and of course, a whole lotta drinking going on.

One woman didn’t feel the need to venture further than the beer line. What was she celebrating? “Being, like, really Irish,” said the woman with the flowered stud in her tongue who claimed 25 percent Irish on her mother’s side. “It means a lot of having fun. Whatever it takes.”

Another complained about the lack of “free” drinks coming her way.

“It’s hard to get free drinks. I paid $10 for two drinks. What happened to free drinks?” she asked. After we helped her cause by finding a booze sponsor, she oozed with gratitude (sarcasm).

One hiccup - partygoers told us the event ran out of green beer.
