Gaslamp Turns On for Holidays

How to celebrate the holidays in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter

The rooftops of historic buildings on Fifth Avenue will be decorated with special lighting over the holidays .  The lights will be on from 5 p.m. to midnight until January 1st, 2009.

"We're going to light up the Gaslamp. Starting tonight, we're going to put over 10,000 lightbulbs on the top of the historic buildings here on Fifth Avenue," said Jimmy Parker, Executive Director of the Gaslamp Quarter Association Tuesday before the lights first turned on.

San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter Association is planning a number of events for the holiday including "Blue Christmas in the Gaslamp" -- a night of free entertainment throughout the Gaslamp. Participating clubs include Jimmy Love's, Hard Rock Cafe, Dick's Last Resort, Henry's Pub, Patrick's II and Rock Bottom Brewery. The event will be held Thursday, December 11th.

Then on Sunday, December 14th, pets will dress up in their favorite holiday costumes for the Gaslamp Holiday Pet Parade. Check it out at 3 p.m. at the Hilton Park near 4th Avenue and K Street. If you want to enter your pet, there is a $10 entry fee.

And the Poinsettia Bowl Battle of the Bands is scheduled for December 21st at 6 p.m. Watch the marching bands from the competing schools in a musical showdown on 5th Avenue.
