Beyond the Cleavage

Raquel Welch’s connection to San Diego is strong, the Hollywood actress decided to make La Jolla, her former hometown, one of the stops on her current book tour.

Welch appeared at Warwick’s in La Jolla to sign “Beyond the Cleavage” Monday evening.

Fans lined up outside the store for a chance to meet the actress who first moved to San Diego with her family in the 1950’s.

“Welcome home,” one fan said to the actress when she first entered the book store. “Thank you, it will always be my home,” she said.

Welch, grew up and lived in La Jolla for some time with her first husband, her high school sweetheart James Welch. On Monday she recalled driving past Warwick’s on her way to a little record store where the two of them would sit and listen to Elvis on the record player.

Her sister, who lives just up the street from the bookstore, sat next to her during the signing and Welch expected to visit with her brother as well as some old school friends while making this stop on her book tour.

The book, titled “Beyond the Cleavage” is about “beyond the image, behind the image, something other than just the image,” she said. “The kind of real person that’s beneath the poster shots and the sort of fantasy.”

There was no denying the 69-year old actress looks great. When asked for her secret to staying young? “I just live right, darling,” she said.
