The Fleet Science Center’s Space Theater renovation, part of a $20 million museum facelift, is set to reopen to eye-popping effect.

The theater has been closed for more than three months while construction progressed, but will wow San Diegans again starting on Dec. 13. The 76-foot tiled dome screen will first screen Wild Ocean, which the museum described as “an explosive, symphonic film about man and nature that captures one of the world's greatest spectacles.”

One element that will stun moviegoers: a new 16,000-watt digital surround sound system.

The museum hopes that the theater renovation and other projects will give the institution greater long term financial security as well as strengthen its endowment.
