The historic Starlight Theater in Balboa Park is asking for the public's help to keep its doors open. Theater officials said a decrease in ticket sales and donations are putting the theater's future in jeopardy.

The theater has been producing shows for its summer seasons for 63 years but has been hit hard by the downturn in the economy. Theater directors said ticket sales make up only about half of the funds needed to produce each summer season and that's why individual and corporate support is so critical.

Kimberley Layton, Board President for Starlight Theater said, "We were optimistic in February and March that donations and support would pick-up, but we are seeing the same thing happening here that has been happening to theatres all over the country, corporate donations are down as well as individual support. With our seasonal nature and the need for so much up front financial support to mount each season, we may be feeling it more intensely than other local theatres who are year round. This significant drop is having a major impact - and could hinder our season practically before it starts."

Visit the theater's website to make your online, tax-deductible donation or simply call the box office at (619) 232-STAR (7827) for more information on how to contribute. Online and box office ticket sales are also available.
