The Taste of Asia 2009 event is back in Balboa Park on Saturday, September 26th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This annual event, emceed by NBC 7/39's own Tony Shin, is hosted by a variety of local Asian community organizations as a collaborative effort to raise money and awareness for those who are less fortunate. This is a completely volunteer-based charity event and 100% of the proceeds are donated to charities in Asia.
One thing that you will not want to miss is a cooking demonstration from one of San Diego's favorite chefs: Chef Larry. This world renowned chef is locally known as the personality on his Time Warner Cable 30-minute cooking show "Chef Larry's Cuisine." He has won many awards including multiple gold medals in the "Culinary Olympics," but will be in Balboa Park to give you his own little taste of Asia. This year, Taste of Asia will support the Lotus Outreach and the International Humanity Foundation.
Lotus Outreach was originally established to support refugee education in India. Recently Lotus Outreach has expanded and helps with the rehabilitation for survivors of human trafficking and exploitation throughout Asia. They also support preventative efforts such as keeping at-risk students in school. As their motto states, their goal is renewing hope and restoring dreams.
The International Humanity Foundation has one mission: to educate. The first half of this goal is to educate the poor. The remaining half of this goal is to educate the world about the poor. With locations in Indonesia, Kenya and Thailand, IHF strives to educate the youth in these countries through their orphanages and education centers.
Although the issues and charities are serious, the mood promises to be light-hearted and enjoyable for all. Join the cause and come taste all the wonderful foods of Asia. There will be fun cultural activities that everyone in the family can participate in from arts and crafts to cultural games. Ethnic entertainment will be a highlight of the event as you are astounded by performances from local cultural groups.
Come to Taste of Asia - support the cause, participate in the events, and eat the delicious foods from a variety of countries all the way from China to India.
