Sports has always been a part of my life, and being a sportscaster was my dream growing up in suburban Chicago," says NBC 7/39's Jim Stone.
Jim Stone has been living that dream for more than 30 years now. His award-winning career has included stops as a Sports Director in Reno, Nev.; Springfield, Ill. and the Harrisburg-Lancaster market in Pennsylvania. Stone joined NBC 7/39 in March 1990.
"I knew I wanted to be a sportscaster at an early age," says Stone. "To be able to succeed at it has been a wonderful experience."
Stone came to San Diego while covering Penn State's appearance in the Holiday Bowl in 1989. Three months later he was here to stay, as a sports anchor and reporter. He's been the weekend sports anchor at NBC 7/39 ever since, and for seven years he has also hosted the popular Sportswrap show after Chargers football on Sundays.
The San Diego Press Club has honored Stone in the past for his work as a sports reporter. He also won numerous Golden Mike Awards. Stone was twice named Nevada's Sportscaster of the Year by the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters. He also has earned the Associated Press award as Central Pennsylvania's Top Sportscaster.
Stone was recently named as the play-by-play voice of University of San Diego basketball and has served in the past as the play-by-play announcer of San Diego State University football and basketball. He has also spent time as the play-by-play voice of the University of Nevada. He has called games for the San Diego Sockers. He is also the voice of the CIF championships, when those high school football and basketball title games are televised locally.
"Finding a good college was the key to my success," says Stone, who earned a broadcast journalism degree from the University of Missouri, one of the nation's top journalism schools. While he was there, he met his wife, Jill. Their daughter, Mindy, a recent graduate of Missouri's School of Journalism, is now a reporter at KKTV in Colorado Springs, Colo. She also spent two years as a reporter at KGHI-TV in Kearney, Neb.
"She is trying to become a sportscaster, I'm so proud," Stone says of Mindy. His son, Zach, is in his third year at Palomar Community College, where he is the public-address announcer for the school's baseball team and a reporter for the student radio station.
Jim Stone's dream of becoming a sportscaster has apparently spread. The Stone family has lived in Rancho Bernardo since he joined NBC 7/39.
