Jason Austell joined the crew of NBC 7/39 News in the Morning in October 2007.
This, after 15 years of reporting traffic and breaking news from the skies above San Diego County.
Jason is able to use his unique perspective of the area in a way viewers can truly appreciate.
From brush fires to high speed chases to dramatic rescues, Jason has seen it all.
Joining the morning crew in the studio, he still takes to the skies in Newschopper 7/39 on an occasional basis.
Jason became co-anchor of the morning show in February 2008. Alongside Marianne Kushi, San Diegans can count on morning news coverage that is second to none.
“When I first started the morning show, what really amazed me was the crew," Austell reflects. “I still think one of the best elements of the show are the people the viewers rarely get to see. The producers, directors, writers, and technicians here make getting up early and coming to work a lot of fun.”
Jason grew up the son of a Naval aviator who commanded fighter squadrons and even a Naval Air Station. While he always considered San Diego his home, life in a military family had Jason moving frequently. He attended high schools in Northern Virginia, and New Orleans before graduating from San Pasqual in Escondido.
Jason enjoys surfing, trail running and ice hockey. He and his wife, Moji live with their son Cameron in La Jolla.
