The Padres purchased the contracts of six minor leaguers, adding them to their 40-man roster and protecting them from the Rule 5 Draft.

Among the players picked up was pitcher Matt Bush, who was taken first overall out of Mission Bay High in 2004.

Bush first auditioned at shortstop, then as a pitcher before blowing out his elbow. Bush had Tommy John surgery and missed all of last season. He has never played any higher then single A ball and is the Padres' poster player for bad drafts.

Bush is a long shot to ever play in the big leagues, but he is a part of the 40 man roster.
