SAN DIEGO -- While demonstrators gathered downtown Thursday to protest the second inauguration of President George W. Bush, members of San Diego's military community expressed their support for the president.

What began as a modest-sized protest on Broadway Street and 4th Avenue grew into a large demonstration of about 350 people, NBC 7/39 reported.Protesters carried signs that read, "Bush is still not my president," and, "Bush lies, people die," NBC 7/39 reported. Demonstrators interviewed by the station said they were upset over the war in Iraq and by an election that they believe was manipulated."We're out here for a very important reason," said Melanie Bennett. "We want everyone to know that not everyone agrees with having Bush as president. We want people to know: You can help. You can stop this. You don't have to be afraid.""For the second time in our nation's history, we've had an election that does not represent the people," said Adam Smith. "We think the Diebold voting machines are not adequately representing the people and that there is manipulation going on. And, to spend $40 million on an inauguration is ridiculous when we still aren't adequately arming our troops."Earlier in the day, newly sworn-in citizens had a different reaction. Many were military members or had spouses serving in the military, NBC 7/39 reported. They said the president was doing the right thing by staying the course in Iraq."Yes, we are all worried about loved ones, but that is his job," said Oy Sullivan. "That is what he decided to do and he has to go back and defend our country the best way he knows how.""I think people understand the gravity of the situation," said Maj. Phil McLain. "If we were to pick up and run it would damage our credibility and our security around the world."
