Father Charged After His Car is Stolen with Son Inside

Man's 6-year-old son slept through entire ordeal

An upstate New York man has been hit with child endangerment charges after his car was stolen with his sleeping 6-year-old son inside.

Phillip Owens, 26, of Irondequoit, told police he had left his son in the unlocked car with the engine running Saturday night while making a pit stop at a Rochester convenience store, WROC TV-8 reported.

While he was buying a drink at around 10:30 p.m., someone drove off with his car, Owens told police.

Police used Owens’ cell phone signal to locate the vehicle a half-hour later and found the boy still sleeping inside.

Owens is set to appear in court Feb. 28 to face a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle newspaper reported.

No one has been arrested for the car theft.
