Padres Catcher Suspended After Positive Drug Test

San Diego Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal apologized and took accountability for what he put into his body

San Diego Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal has been suspended for 50 games for testing positive for testosterone according to officials with Major League Baseball.

The rookie catcher made history earlier this year when he scored his first two home runs in the MLB from opposite sides of the plate.

Then, in August, the 24-year-old was sidelined with an oblique strain.

The league announced his suspension Wednesday adding it will begin at the start of the 2013 season.

In a statement released by the team, Grandal apologized and took accountability for what he put into his body.

"I apologize to the fans, my teammates, and to the San Diego Padres," the written statement read. "I was disappointed to learn of my positive test and under the Joint Drug Program I am responsible for what I put into my body. I must accept responsibility for my actions and serve my suspension."

Here's the San Diego Padres official statement:

"We were disappointed to learn of the suspension of Yasmani Grandal for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention & Treatment Program. We fully support Major League Baseball's policy and its efforts to eliminate performance enhancing drugs from our game. Per the protocol outlined by Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement, we will not comment further on this matter.”

Grandal issued a statement in which apologized to fans, his teammates and the Padres. He said he took responsibility for his actions according to the Associated Press.
