Villanueva Makes History in Padres Win

San Diego 3rd baseman sets home run record for Mexican-born rookies

The last time the Dodgers saw Christian Villanueva was during their series in Mexico and it was towards the beginning of his franchise-record 0-for-37 slump.

This time L.A. got a look at the Guadalajara native and he made some history for his homeland.

Villanueva hit a pair of home runs in San Diego's 7-5 win at Dodger Stadium. He has 14 on the season, breaking Geronimo Gil's MLB record for home runs by a Mexican-born rookie. Christian also moves one dinger behind Nationals star Bryce Harper for the National League lead.

Shortstop Freddy Galvis and catcher A.J. Ellis also went deep for the Padres, who have a chance to win their second straight series against the Dodgers on Sunday afternoon but they'll have to do it in a unique way.

With Joey Lucchesi still on the disabled list nursing a strained hip and Robbie Erlin struggling in the starting rotation the Friars are going bullpenning. Matt Strahm will start but likely only go a couple of innings, followed by a whole lot of relievers as manager Andy Green tries to stitch together nine innings-worth of arms.

The Dodgers answer with Walker Buehler, the guy who started and threw six innings of their combined no-hitter against the Padres in the first game of that series down in Monterrey.
