Tiger Misses Cut at Torrey Pines

Seven time Farmers Insurance Open champion will not play the weekend

If there was any tournament where one might expect Tiger Woods to come off of basically a year from competitive golf and have a chance at competing, the Farmers Insurance Open is that tournament.

Going back to his early days Woods has won 14 times at Torrey Pines (eight as a pro, six as an amateur). This year will not make for number 15.

Woods chased yesterday’s 76 with an even-par 72, finishing 4-over par and missing the cut by four shots. Woods will not play the weekend at one of his favorite places to play. Woods had not played on the PGA Tour for 17 months due to back surgeries and while he said he would have liked to win in La Jolla, this season he has other concerns.

“Just like anybody I’m trying to get ready for that first full week in April,” said Woods, referring to The Masters, the year’s first major championship. “Eventually I want to have everything come together so that’s the plan. Unfortunately I didn’t have a chance to win this tournament because I really love this golf course.”

Since he’s not playing the weekend at Torrey Pines, Woods will get a jump-start on his 17-hour flight to play a tournament in Dubai next week.

As for the guys who are still around, Justin Rose is the lone leader at 8-under par. Right behind him is Adam Hadwin, who shot a 59 at the event in Palm Springs a week ago, and defending champion Brandt Snedeker, who are both 7-under.

There are a few guys with San Diego ties lurking, as well. Former San Diego State Aztec star J.J. Spaun is 3-under par … Torrey Pines High School alum Pat Perez is 2-under par … Rancho Santa Fe’s Phil Mickelson is 1-under, making the cut by one shot … Poway’s Charley Hoffman made the cut on the number at even par … Murrieta native Rickie Fowler missed the cut at 3-over … and another former Aztec, Xander Schauffele, tied Woods at 4-over par.

Round 3 tees off at 7:30 Saturday morning on the South Course.
