Fisherman Reels in $600,000 Prize

A local bass fisherman pockets $600,000 at tournament in Georgia, according to a published report.

Ramona native Kevin Hawk raised the winner's trophy Sunday at the 2010 Forrest Wood Cup at Lake Lanier, reported BassFan.com.

The tournament lasts four days, according to the site. For all but the last days, the competitors fish from their own boats, then switch to boats supplies by the FLW Tour, which is named for Forrest L Wood, the founder of Ranger Boats.

"Kevin Hawk grew up with my son, and as a young kid fell in love with fishing," Janette Cohoon said in an e-mail sent to NBCSanDiego. "We would take him to the river with us and he was dedicated more to fishing than to tubing!"

According to BassFan.com, Hawk's victory was due to hard work more than the new high tech gear available to fisherman. And good luck didn't hurt, either -- Hawk's closest competition came from Cody Meyer, who "suffered an electronics malfunction and lost fishing time because of it," the site reported.

Hawk isn't resting on his fishing laurels -- he's headed next to Michigan for a tourney outside Detroit, and isn't due back in San Diego County for "a couple months," he said Tuesday.
