“And now … your San Diegooooooooo Footy McFooty Face!!!!”
If San Diego does end up getting a MLS expansion team that might be what you hear over the public address system at home games.
Soccer City SD, the development where a new Major League Soccer team would play if the FS Investors group plan to redevelop the Mission Valley land where Qualcomm Stadium sits is approved, is allowing fans to choose the name of the franchise.
Voting will go on for several days but they might as well shut it down now. It looks like we have a winner:

Footy McFooty Face is going to run away and hide with this thing. Soccer City SD says in a Facebook post that “Soccer Club or Football Club can be added to names, and similarly, a nickname or mascot can be added to traditional names. You, the fans, will help us decide on that later!”
So it could be Footy McFooty Face SC or FC Footy McFooty Face. There are plenty of possibilities. Or more likely there are not.
This current vote will determine the final 10 possibilities which will be sent to Major League Soccer for approval before a final decision is made. So even if Footy McFooty Face wins the popular vote the odds of MLS letting it become the name of one of its expansion teams are probably not all that great.
Or are they?
A year ago folks in Great Britain allowed people to vote on the name of a new research vessel and the clear-cut winner was Boaty McBoatface (very likely the inspiration for the soccer team name). The U.K.’s Natural Environment Research Council said thanks but no thanks, instead naming it after Sir David Attenborough.
But to have a little fun with the winner the Council did name a robotic submarine Boaty McBoatface and yes … the submarine is in fact yellow (gotta love that British sense of humor). Just this month Boaty McBoatface was taken to Antarctica to explore the waters under the ice.
So even if the major professional soccer team in San Diego is not named Footy McFooty Face, perhaps the mascot will don the name. Then we can have a whole new round of fun letting people online come up with the design of the costume.
