Smith Delivers in Tenth

The Padres flashed the leather and delivered with the bat at just the right times Wednesday in Minnesota to split the two game series against the Twins with a 5-4 win.

The Twins were in good shape to push across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Tied up, with two on and two outs Eduardo Escobar belted a drive to center field. Alexi Amarista barely flagged it down, hitting the turf with the ball firmly in his glove. The inning was over with the game still tied.

The Padres didn't waste any time getting the lead in extra innings. Their first batter, Seth Smith, hit a home run to right to break the tie. It was Smith's 12th of the year.

The Padres held on in the bottom of the 10th to secure the win. They are off on Thursday and conclude the road trip with a weekend series in Pittsburgh.
