Ex-Charger Shawne Merriman Hospitalized

Former pro linebacker said he was dehydrated

Hours after reports that he was rushed to the hospital from a Hollywood club, former Chargers player and Pro Bowler Shawne Merriman was back on Twitter.

Merriman returned to the club after receiving fluids at the hospital, his publicist, Denise White, said in an email to The Associated Press.

He had just gotten off a plane after filming a movie in Canada, White said.

NBCSports reported Merriman appeared to be okay Monday morning, citing his posts on Twitter that mention only a shirt being ruined.

He also said he was dehydrated and poked fun at the TMZ headline.

The former pro linebacker was taken to Cedars Sinai Medical Center for an undisclosed "medical emergency" NFL.com reported.

The Los Angeles Times was the first to report Merriman’s medical emergency at The Colony in Hollywood around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

James Brennan, a friend of Merriman's who owns restaurants and nightclubs in San Diego, told the AP that he spoke with Merriman on Monday morning and that the former linebacker was OK.

Brennan also said Merriman returned to the club after being treated.

No official word on what prompted Merriman's hospitalization.

Merriman has had more than his share of headlines.

In Sept. 2009, he was accused by a former reality television personality of choking her in his home. He was arrested but did not face criminal charges.

At his peak, the three-time Pro Bowl selection was regarded as one of the league's top pass-rushers and earned the nickname "Lights Out." He was the NFL's 2005 defensive rookie of the year after being drafted 12th overall by San Diego.

Merriman had 39 1/2 sacks through his first three seasons before injuries slowed his production.
