It is shaping up to be a wild finish to the Farmers Insurance Open with a real chance for a San Diegan to win on his home turf.
Poway’s Charley Hoffman, who made the cut on the number, shot a 68 to get himself in the hunt at 4-under par. Rancho Santa Fe’s Phil Mickelson got out early and had a nice day. Lefty shot a 4-under 68 to get to 5-under par. He is one of 23 players within four shots of the lead.
Sitting right in front of him is a guy who was born in Los Angeles but we’ll call him our own since he went to San Diego State. Former Aztec J.J. Spaun is 6-under par and well within striking distance.
Just one shot better than Spaun is yet another San Diegan, Torrey Pines High School alum Pat Perez. He tied for the low round of the day with a 5-under 67 and is 7-under par, just two shots off the lead.
That lead is held by a pair of guys: Patrick Rodgers, a 24-year-old from Stanford looking for his first PGA Tour win … and Brandt Snedeker, the defending champ who also won here in 2012. They’re both 9-under par.
The final round starts at 8:15 on Sunday on the South Course at Torrey Pines.
