San Diegan Breaks Record at Boston Marathon

The unofficial results of the Boston Marathon are in and a San Diegan led the pack.

Desiree Davila from Chula Vista placed second in the women's division with a time of 2 hours, 22 minutes and 38 seconds, the fastest time ever by an American woman on Monday. Davila finished just two seconds behind first place finisher Caroline Kilel from Kenya.

Desiree Davila said her legs just didn't have another push in them.

Davila led a thrilling finish in the women's Boston Marathon. The American runner held the lead in the closing miles, lost it and then pushed back to the front several times before she ran out of surges just before the finish line.

Trying to become the first American winner since 1985, Davila couldn't hold off the long strides of Kenya's Caroline Kilel.

But clearly Davila was the darling of hundreds of thousands of fans who lined the course on Patriot's Day in Boston.

Fans urged on Davila with chants of "U-S-A!" and she responded with the fastest time ever by an American.

Davila was a standout track and field star at Hilltop High School, where she graduated in 2001. At Hilltop she earned four letters in track, cross country and soccer and was the three-time CIF and metro league champion in cross-country 1998 -2000, according to her bio from Arizona State University. At ASU, Davila earned two All-American honors in track and field.

Davila trains in Michigan as part of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Running Project team.
